Discussion Four: Why do Ghosts Stick Around?

Okay, everyone! It's my turn to do a discussion today.

Why do you think ghosts haunt? It's what ghosts do, of course. But why? Here is the link to a website that may help you come up with a theory or two: http://www.paralumun.com/ghosts.htm

Here are some reasons I could think of:

-They have unfinished business on earth. This is a very common belief, portrayed in all kinds of ghost stories and movies.

-They don't know they are dead. This is a huge element in the "phantom hitchhiker" stories.
* Find out all about phantom hitchhikers here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vanishing_hitchhiker

- They are so attached to a place on earth that they just can't leave

I hope you guys liked my first discussion. Please post your comments and ghost stories, and add to this week's topic!

  1. Brenna- That is a super interesting discussion topic, Frankie. I think it's possibly a combo of a couple of things. I think ghosts don't know they are dead or are having a hard time leaving places or people they love. But why do they get so, um, creepy about it? Like if it was a relative, why don't they just show up and be nice, not like try to scare people or move things and stuff.

Jess- I think they maybe know they are dead but don't want to be? Or want to tell people something, like where to find treasure or something. Yeah, that's cool. I'd want a ghost or somebody to help me find treasure. Or maybe they just love it here so much they can't leave. I'm with Brenna on the creepy bit though. Except for pirates. I'd like to see a pirate ghost. Like on Pirates of the Caribbean--did you guys see that movie? How they looked alive sometimes and then they were skeletons later. They were totally awesome! We probably should put all the pirates movies on our list. They have some great ghosty stuff.

  2. I think ghost's haunt because there is something they don't want to leave behind. They want to continue looking after a loved one or don't want to abandon their home. Maybe ghost don't understand they are creepy. Maybe ghost think we are the ones who look and act creepy!

  3. Jocelyn - I don't think ghosties know they are dead. How do we really know when we have died? They just keep going about their everyday lives. I agree with Emily, that they don't know they are scary to us.

Jess S. - I'm a friend of Emily and Jocelyn's. Ghosts and paranormal stuff scares me a lot, but I wanted to post anyway. I think ghost are trying to give a message, like a lot of people see ghosts trying to talk but they can't hear them. I also believe, like your article said, that we only see them when are senses are impaired. My father is a surgeon and he has had patients tell him they had seen spirits just before falling asleep or just after waking up from anesthesia.

  4. My sister Marsali and I were discussing this today and we think that a ghost is the imprint of the person .. like when the person died part of them just could not leave .. we have had dealings with several ghosts in our time ..

Marsali has seen the ghost at the store Mama used to work at .. he loved mama and would take her things if she left anything at work. We have it almost on video .. he was the spirit of a guy who died in a fire there and even wrote his name on the clip board one night. He was friendly as long as you talked to him at night. But would do ornery things. LOL!!

  5. I like the "unfinished business" theory. It's a classic!

  6. I think it depends on the ghost. What was going on in the person's life before they died? If their death was sudden and unexpected they may not know it even happened.

  7. Conclusion: A lot of different ideas. Most said it was because of some type of unfinished business, or a need to protect/care for something/someone. I think this has been one of our best discussions. Remember, the next one will be posted on Thursday.
