Discussion Six: Werewolves

Werewolves have made a comeback in pop culture recently, appearing in popular book series and movies. But where did the legends come from? And can a person be half human, half animal? Many people believe in these creatures of the night. Do you?

Here are some websites that provides everything you would want to know about werewolves and their "cousins." Take a look, and then let us know what you think:

Emily here, just wanted to add: Do you think werewolves fall into the same category as ghost and aliens? Why or why not?

  1. Hmmmmm .. I always loved werewolves .. They say you do not want to meet one when they are transformed because they will bite you .. I did think it would be fun to track one down and watch them transform .. Kelsyee

Kelsyee you did not answer their question .. sheesh .. i do not think they fall into the same catagory as ghost or aliens .. but then ghosts do not fit into the same category as aliens because one exhists and lives on earth and the other has a home on a planet somewhere else . . that is my though .. werewolves are on the earth but they are living creatures not ghosts ..

  2. Brenna- I think they fit in the paranormal category, which to me includes anything that is out of the ordinary-aliens, ghosts, werewolves, vampires, all that stuff. I think they are super cool. Of course I really, really like dogs, so maybe that's why I think werewolves are cool? I dunno...

Jess- Yeah, I think they are in a related category with anything superstitious and different. I was surprised in the Wikipedia article at the bottom where they say that werewolves can come back as vampires. I never heard that before! I have one friend who always wants to be a werewolf on Halloween and stuff--I wonder if maybe he knows a lot more about them? I'll have to ask. Maybe he knows one! I think they would be scary but maybe they're not all bad. Like maybe there could be a good one who just eats bad people--like a vigilante/werewolf. That would make a great story!

  3. Kit - Yes, yes, yes! Werewolves are my FAVORITE paranormal/mythological creature ever! Everything about them is fascinating. I think it's completely possible that there really are werewolves. It could be like a form of rabies, like in how it's transmitted and untreatable. In thinking like that, it could be considered like a disease. I would so love to be a werewolf!

Emily - I love werewolves, too. Plus my all time favorite animal is a wolf. I don't know if I consider them in the same category as aliens and ghosts. There is a lot more documentation for the existence of aliens and ghosts. I don't think werewolves has a much scientific backing. But I do think they exist, but in a more mythological sense than aliens.

Kit - We can be the wolf sisters!

    Emily - oh, boy...

  4. Nellie: I LOVE WEREWOLVES.
I'll admit- Twilight kind of ruined it for me. Seriously...werewolves are not like that.
Werewolves fall into the same category as aliens because, duh, aliens are awesome and so are werewolves.

  5. I think werewolves fall into the same category, meaning they are mysterious paranormal creatures. However you look at it, I think they will always be one of the most popular monsters on the block.

  6. Werewolves are NOT real! And they do NOT fit in with the paranormal.

There is a BIG difference between paranormal creatures and mythological creatures. Creatures like werewolves, vampires and unicorns are mythological - NOT REAL! Creatures like Nessie, Bigfoot and Yeti are cryptids. Cryptids are animals of cryptozoology. Cryptozoology is the study of hidden animals. Crypitds may not be proven by science (YET!), but they have evidance and sightings to back them up. Many well known animals of today were crypids at one time. Like kangaroos, gorillas and pandas.
